WIRG Excels at the Green Cup Tournament
WIRG had an exciting weekend at the Green Cup Tournament in Sedro Wooly, hosted by our neighbors at Skagit Valley Roller Derby (SVRD). This tournament was designed for newer skaters (less than 1 year bout experience), skaters returning from injury, with some vets thrown in to round out the rosters. In addition to the main bouts between WIRG, SVRD, and Grunge City; there were also co-ed bouts, black and white scrimmages, and even a junior bout.
Your Whidbey Island Roller Girls rocked the tournament, and though they came in second overall – they did score more points in their 3 bouts of the round robin tournament than any other team participating. Vets stepped back, dialed it back, and played new positions, allowing the newer skaters to excel in jamming, as pivots, and getting to enjoy more play time than they normally would.
The first bout on Saturday against Grunge City saw WIRG scoring over 300 points and our very own Cynister Sister receiving her first MVP trophy.
On Sunday the ladies played in two bouts, both against SVRD. The first bout against SVRD showed WIRG coming out on top and Gell Fling receiving the MVP award for her work on the track.
In the championship game, also against SVRD (& a few friends), the hard hitting action, great strategy, and fast pace wowed the crowd who came out to watch. Though WIRG did not come out on top, only 3 points separated the two teams. Stealth Mode Siren was named MVP for her leadership and hard work on the track. The bench coaching staff of Dischord and KayOss kept the skaters calm and collected through all 3 games.
Our W.I.S.E. Guys and Coach Jaded Tales also “played” during the tournament with Liquor Tales reffing 8 bouts – 4 as a Jam Ref. If you think that’s not an accomplishment, consider that jammers get to rest between jams. Onna Rampage and Coach Jaded provided their expertise with NSOing throughout the tournament. And our very own EMT, Chris Trujillo, made a guest appearance all the way from Idaho for Sunday’s games.
This week finds the ladies of WIRG who participated in the tournament with lots of bruises (we wear them like trophies earned in battle), big smiles, and recounting stories of the fun they had all weekend playing with their teammates. And one bench coach who can barely talk. Thank you to SVRD for hosting the Green Cup, and to our photographer, Jeff Jackson, and his wife for capturing the action on Sunday. What a great event and an incredible learning experience for both the newer skaters and the vets. And, of course, thank you to all our fans that came out to cheer us on!
